The Shillong Christian Youth Organisation and Conference (SCYO&C) was established on the 25th August, 1947 under the able and inspiring leadership of Rev. T. M. Thomas and Rev. T.B. Phillips of the Welsh Presbyterian Mission. The SCYO&C consist of 16 (sixteen) Youth Fellowship from different parts of Shillong and its suburb. Its aim is to bring together Christian youths of Shillong to serve the Lord, to bear witness to His name and to channelize their energy towards meaningful and productive activities.
Over the years, the SCYO&C has grown and expanded its activities. Some of the important activities and projects of the organization are summarized below:
- The SCYO&C has a General Conference which meets twice every year. The General Conferences are held in different member youth fellowships on a rotation basis. The conferences are usually held in the third week of May and the second week of September every year. At every Conference around 200 delegate attend the business session on Saturday and around 3000 people attend the Conference meetings on Sundays.
- The SCYO&C encourages young men and women with talent in Music to come forward and participate in Music Festival organized by it regularly. It also acts as a forum where young talents come together to develop their skills in gospel music whether in the traditional Khasi tunes or Western tunes. It has a Choir that consist of singers from the different units Through this Choir, the SCYO&C has been trying to spread the Good News of the Gospel through songs and music.
- The SCYO&C runs a Lower Primary School at Mawrah Village, East Khasi Hills District. The aim of establishing the school there was to impart good education to the children of that Village. The inhabitants of the village are mostly poor and illiterate and keeping this in mind, the SCYO&C runs the school as part of its endeavour to help their social upliftment.
- With its Motto to “Attempt Great Things for God, Expect Great Things from God” in mind, the SCYO&C, recently started a Mission Work amongst the Non Tribals and appointed a Mission Worker to work among Non Tribal population residing in Police Bazaar, Jail Road, Polo and Nongmynsong locality of Shillong.
- The SCYO&C also conducted a Hygiene Awareness Campaign at Mawrah village aiming to educate the village people about the importance of clean and healthy living.
- The SCYO&C through its different constituent units, used to organise a one day Quarterly Evangelical Meeting/ Street Preaching in it’s Mission Field in Police Bazar, Jail Road, Polo and Nongmynsong area of Shillong.
