(Ioannis 18:37).

Man’s Destiny

Mr. Debojit Sircar

Several years ago, I was watching the landing of one of the space shuttles on television. There was a station break, and an advertisement of a well-known breakfast drink came on. The spokesman for the product spoke of man’s destiny and how it will be attained. He said that man’s destiny lay among the stars, and the way he would reach that destiny would be by a space shuttle.

The Bible has something to say about man’s destiny, Jesus said that there are only two ways that lie open to man – the broad way and the straight way. He also stated that “no one comes to the Father but by me.”

Yes, man has a destiny. For the disobedient and unfaithful that destiny is eternal torment. For the righteous, those who love God and keep His commandments, it is eternal happiness in Heaven. One may reach the first destiny mentioned without any effort on his part – just do nothing, believe nothing and obey nothing. The other destiny, Heaven, will not be reached by a spacecraft, but through Jesus Christ and obedience to His will. What is your destiny?

THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world…. that they may see your good works and glorify your father in Heaven.” These verses talk about the ‘Light of the World’ and they were being spoken by Jesus Christ.

What is Light? In general terms, light is the natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things possible. If there is no light, there will be darkness and we know darkness is not good. Things will not be able to complete, nobody can see anyone or anything, everyday work becomes difficult to function, people can injure themselves and can even harm each other. We will be living in a state of chaos. But because of light, we are able to do everything. We are able to see everything around us and praise God for everything we see. Light does not just light up only a particular area, but everything around it. Sun, the brightest star in our Solar System is an example of this light.

Who is this light here? In the context of the Bible, the light that we talk about is the light that was, that is and that always will be, and that light is the Son of God. That light is our Saviour, Jesus Christ. This is the light that came from God Himself. This is the light that came to fill up the whole world with brightness. This light is the source of all light and life. It does away with all the darkness present. This is the light that can’t be extinguished ever.

What do verses 14 – 16 talk about? Jesus spoke these words to the multitude. He tells the multitude to be the light of the world. He speaks these same exact words to Christians today. He is telling us to be the “light of the World”. He does so to encourage us to be the light that overcomes the darkness. We know that Jesus is the light over all lights and life. He shines the brightest of all the lights. This same light is present in all of us once we have decided to follow Jesus. He is the light present in all Christians. It’s Christ living in us. Therefore, we have to shine bright like Christ. Because we have this light in us, we just can’t keep it to ourselves or we can’t just hide this light, but also give and share it to others.

Plenty of times, we have read these verses. We have gone through these words many a time, but a lot of times, we read these without any in depth understanding. We just go through  like textbooks or magazines or journals we read. We don’t read  with understanding and with feelings. A lot of times, these are the words kept as posts, stories and statuses, but we do not dwell in them. When Jesus speak these words, he wants us to feel it. He wants us to tell and show to others what we read. He wants us to feel that we are the light of the world and to show this light to others. These words should hold very deep meaning in our lives and we should also practice what we read. As Light of the world, we show that we are followers of Christ, and as followers of Christ, we need to be like him. We have to stand firm in our beliefs, in our faith and do what God has commanded us to do. We are to be like Jesus in everything. Jesus is perfect and we know that we are not. But we can always strive to be like him. We have to follow him in everything that we do. We have to obey God, do his will, trust God in everything, love one another, forgive each other, do what is right,  not judge, be compassionate. We as Christians, have to show others who don’t know Jesus , who Jesus is. As light, we have all the opportunity to do so.

A lot of times in life, we tend to be of this world, we do things of the world, do things only for our selfish needs, follow the world and the one who rules it. We are afraid and scared, so we hide our light. We fear the world may not like us and it may call us crazy. We deny God because we fear the world will not accept us. We deny Jesus because we love the world too much. We are tempted to do things that are contrary to our beliefs and faith and almost every time we do it.

The world is a beautiful place. Everything in it attract us to it. We are tempted to take the fruits of the world. We see others doing something that is not right, that goes against our faith, we still do it and feel okay doing it because we see everyone doing it. We sin because we have become comfortable in sin. We live with it and in it. We are destroyed by it. But this verse reminds us that, as followers of Christ, we should be firm in our faith. Even when we have to stand alone, even when everyone was doing it, even when it looks good and we are tempted to make a wrong decision, we have to remember, we are the light. The light so powerful that it overcomes all darkness. We should not be afraid to shine our lights to others. We should shine bright like the light of Jesus in us. When others see this light in us, they will be attracted to us. As light, we show others the road to follow. As light, we portray Jesus with our life. When we are light, it shows we can do anything for Christ. We stand firm in our beliefs and others see Jesus working in us. They see Jesus in us. As light to others, we shine so bright that people see our good works and glorify the one who made us. We glorify our Father in Heaven, when we shine our light. People who don’t know Jesus will know and glorify him through us. And they will know the source of light comes from Jesus.

Jesus wants us to know that we are representing him here on Earth. The world will try to tempt us but he wants us to know that he will help us and be with us. We show the world what our Father in Heaven is capable of. He does not want us to extinguish our light ever.

In conclusion, we ask ourselves these questions, Are we obeying God? Or are we too in love with the world? Are we obsessed with the world and blindly following it? Are we tempted to do what others are also doing and ready to extinguish our light? Are we being like Jesus? Are we being “The Light of the World” just as Jesus asked us to be?

Spiritual Freedom
Ms. Monica C. Lyngdoh
Laitumkhrah Presbyterian Church

Freedom is something that everybody has heard of but if you ask for its meaning then everyone will give you different meanings. This is so because everyone has a different opinion about freedom. For some freedom means the freedom of going anywhere they like, for some it means to speak up for themselves, and for some, it is liberty of doing anything they like

The real meaning of freedom according to books is: Freedom refers to a state of independence where you can do what you like without any restriction by anyone. Moreover, freedom can be called a state of mind where a person has the right and freedom of doing what he or she can think of. Also, a person can feel freedom from within.

But here, when we talk about  real freedom it is what we feel beyond the physical requirements. It is one of the most essential element of our lives. It gives us peace not only physically but it sets us free from all mental, emotional, social and financial bondage.

Sometimes doing what we want which the world describes it as freedom can do more of self harm as it is when someone is free to do whatever he or she wants, makes the mind empty, emotionless and not only destroy their own life but vice-versa.

The act of obedience, humility, perseverance and all the good qualities which God imparted in an individual right from the beginning of creation but soon fade away into small vapours when sin enters in their lives. But this kind of good quality act can be acquired if only an individual accepts their shortcomings and experience Spiritual Freedom.

Spiritual Freedom can only be obtained if a person is willing to submit himself or share his doubts, stress, agony, anger, sin, short comings and all those human emotions to someone who can take it without complaining and is able to renew all those emotions and thoughtless actions into Godly principles.

This kind of freedom is very special and precious as the bondage and burden which suppress the human lives and make the person suffocate. The amount of stress, pain and the level of doubts which will take place will immensely hamper both physical and spiritual life. And the other person who accepts these struggles and pain, portrays someone who is a super being and is able to handle all these situations.

This super being is our Almighty God, who created the world and wants His creature to experience freedom from bondage, struggles and sin. He wants us to experience Real Freedom which can be only given by His only begotten Son – Jesus Christ.

When Jesus revealed himself as the Messiah, He said that He had come to Earth to “proclaim freedom” (Luke 4:18). And on another occasion, He said, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36).

Jesus was not setting us free to do whatever we wanted; He was freeing us to do what we ought to do. He was liberating us to walk in relationship with God and to be the kind of people He created us to be. This spiritual freedom in Christ is what we as believers call “inside freedom” —  the ability to obey God and choose His will for our lives. And this is the freedom in Christ that sin had long denied us. Only Through Christ, mankind will be able to find the real and true meaning of  freedom.

In conclusion, we have seen through worldly content that freedom is an act of being independent, to be able to speak, to be able do whatever an individual wants and what they seem right in their eyes but this can only bring destruction and the inner peace which every person ultimately longs for, will not be able to experience it. As ignorance, arrogant nature, rebellion and most importantly pride which is the main root to all sins takes place in an individual’s heart, mind and soul. The only pure freedom that we can get and to live life in simplicity, can be found through our Lord God Jesus Christ. He is the Way, The Truth and The Life and No one can come to His Father except through Him ( John 14: 6 ). He is righteous and has not sinned, no not even once. He is the act of pure love, an assurance which is well defined from the Holy Bible, the Great Gift of Spiritual Freedom and Amazing Grace by our Heavenly Father.
